God Bless our troops

Here and abroad. I pray for their salvation and pray for protection for all of them, at home and abroad. My prayers go out to all the victims injured and lost in the Ft.Hood massacre that occurred just days ago.
“Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer” Psalm 66:20

I really like what I’ve read of your blog and what you have to say, so please don’t think of me as combative, I’m mostly just excited to find someone who I might be able to actually talk to openly about my thoughts and questions regarding religion, without being made fun of.
I read the above post and have thought and said the same on my own sites, and while doing so, it brings me back to a short story from Freshman College English that has always stuck with me:
http://www.lexrex.com/informed/otherdocuments/warprayer.htm
Mark Twain’s, ‘The War Prayer’.
I was required to read this my first semester of college and to be honest – it really moved me. To suddenly realize that my prayers to protect people I cared about (my cousin was in the military, etc.), in fact, mostly willed harm to come to those who I didn’t know, – and it challenged every belief I had about how righteous I was in the first place.
I am honestly curious as to your thoughts on the matter.

Thank you for your comment first. I love great comments like yours and provoking thoughts like that in Mr. Twain’s short.
I’m not sure how familiar you are with scripture, but if you read the Old Testament, there are countless places where God commanded his people to go out and kill every Man, Woman & Child along with all the animals that reside in that land. One scripture in particular is 1 Samuel 15, where God commanded this upon Saul, but Saul Disobeyed and reaped curses upon himself for not being obediant.
War is not pretty. War isn’t always the answer. I’m not saying I condone such violence. I’m not saying God has/is condoned things we in America are doing today.
What I am saying is that I want our troops to be protected and blessed and most importantly SAVED(Romans 10:9-10) & Yes if there is a battle that occurs and it is the USA vs. another country, I do want our country and troops to win and to be victorious in what they do.
I pray for our leaders and the decisions that they make to send troops abroad and I hope that those decisions are wrought with favor from GOD ALMIGHTY.

While I tend to relate more to the New Testament versus the Old Testament, you make a valid point in the reference of Saul (who had it coming to him when he kept Agag as a trophy of sorts and the best of the spoils – pride and greed, say what?:) ), in that God did decree the war and destruction of the Amalekites, who were enemies of Israel.
I could go on and on about whether they were a real tribe or more of a theoretical example of the fate of any group who went against God and throw in the various arguments people love to throw around stating that God is on our side because we are fighting Muslims, which usually makes my head hurt in trying to explain how that is so not the case, but now I’m way off the original topic so I’ll just stop.
Back on topic – I agree with what you said in that I also want our troops protected and I do want us to win and I also pray our leaders are making decisions with God in mind. I also would like to see a day where war can be avoided, but realize that may not come to pass in my lifetime. I also pray for the protection of those who do not mean us harm and are caught in the crossfire.
Off topic again – all the talk of Saul and smiting brings to mind the movie coming out next year ‘Legion’… it looks very Old Testament in the wrath of God against mankind as a whole, which is something I also hear people debating when talk of war is brought up in that ‘what if we’re all wrong’. Well, that and the whole fear of 2012, which also makes my head hurt.
Thanks for your insights and thought provoking blog.
